OK, it's not "great literature," but it's close - especially if one compares the vocabulary, syntax, character development, and just over-all writing style & flow with more contemporary novels of adventure/historical novels of adventure & romance. There certainly is a romance, but while it motivates much of the hero's action, the story is as much, or more an adventure. In England, a highly successful fencing master of slightly mysterious antecedents learns that he has a legitimate claim to a marquisate in the west of France. Initially both skeptical & unmoved, his interest increases as he encounters both a lady who has fled the Revolution in company of aristocratic cousins because of noble birth. While he and the lady are smitten with each other, the cousins subtly but clearly express initially inexplicable enmity towards this fencing master. Political intrigue is rife, and in exploring his potential marquisate, the protagonist goes to France shortly upon the death of Robespierre. The majority of the book finds him inadvertently & ever more deeply involved in the conflict between the Royalists and the Republic, as takes place in the west of France. There is a great deal of action. Numerous historical figures have important roles: Hoche, Cadoudal, etc., and so far as I can tell, the specific military actions were well researched by Santini. As, after years of effort the Royalist & Catholic army and the aroused Chouans are in a position to achieve their goal. The frustration is palpable when issues of social class, prestige, and internecine jockeying for position among the "noble" Royalist émigrés, begin to both sabotage excellent, carefully planned strategies, and to discount the value and on-the-ground valor of the Chouans who have laid the ground-work to drive the Republic from the west, and from power in France. The landings & battles of Quiberon, and the attempt to break the entrapment of the Royalists by Lazare Hoche, the pincer strategy settled upon, and the misadventures, intrigues, personal betrayals & military
insubordination that caused it to fail are presented with immediacy, well written dialogue, and characterizations that leave one feeling as if one were there. There is plenty of action as well! One sees the situation from the position of the Chouans, as much as from any other perspective - and one suspects that if Sabatini had a particular sympathy for any of the factions, after his research, it was for the Chouans - whose honesty, loyalty, common sense, and practical approach to fighting and living in hiding from their enemy, are illustrated in some detail & with considerable admiration. This book gave me new interest in the French Revolution, as I researched to explore the accuracy of Santini's own research. This is a novel that can be equally well enjoyed by man & women. The adventure and history, character development, and fine writing style will grab you, whether or not you care about the romance that plays like a grace-note through the story, sounding here & there, as dated as the 18th century's concept of honour is for us today - but still satisfying at the end of the tale, with honour and love affirmed (because, perhaps, we miss both, just a little).

MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW THAT THIS IS THE SAME STORY WITH A DIFFERENT TITLE AS SABATINI'S " MAN AT ARMS ". EXCELLANT STORY LINE.
I have a copy of this book in a 1960's Ballantine Press edition under the title Man-At-Arms. The book itself is quite good. It has all the qualities you expect in a Sabatini novel, although the actual amount of action in this book is a bit less than in the average Sabatini novel. The focus is more on political intrigue, as it involves a man living in England who discovers that he is really a french noble. Unfortunately for him, the French Revolution is in full swing, and his attempts to claim what is rightfully his are continually thwarted by both the revolutionaries and the jealous french nobles in exile who want his inheritance for themselves. Sabatini's diligent historical research shines through yet again in this novel, and his clear and engaging prose are in excellent form. The only thing missing is the near omniscince of the main character. In many of Sabatini's books (e.g. Scaramouche, Captain Blood, The Black Swan, etc.) the main character is set apart from the other characters by his incredible intelligence and intimate knowledge of human motivation, allowing him to manipulate people and circumstances to repeatedly thwart his enemies. In this book, the main character is more a normal person, and as such is both more accessable to the reader yet at the same time slighly less interesting to read about. While certainly not his best book, nearly all of Sabatini's books will be enjoyable for those who enjoy a good swashbuckler novel.
Elegant language in an old style of grace and diplomacy found lacking in contemporary literature. Illuminates a period of French political history that is not well known.
