In this humorously irreverent take on zombies, Ax Handel is a present-day nineteen-year-old pizza delivery guy with a short fuse who is determined to take control of his wildly unpredictable life. His comical attempts to make sense of his relationships with his outrageous family members usually end up in disaster. Suddenly, his life changes—possibly for the better—when zombies stumble out of a nearby cemetery. Life has never been easy for Ax and his mother, and they refuse to be scared off by a horde of the dying impaired. Without any help from Ma, whose hard-living, heavy-metal past has left her strangely sympathetic to the plight of the zombies, or his volatile ex-girlfriend, Zenobia, who's certain he's a head case, or even his zoned-out fugitive father, it’s up to Ax to protect his little town of Karbunkle and what little he owns, while getting revenge on some bad-mannered, lumbering stiffs.

If the author was an 11 year old kid, then I'll change my rating to a 3 stars. Grammar and syntax aside, the sense of humor and adventure was ... well it was absent. I WANTED to like this book. I'm a fan of quirky offbeat humor, but the humor has to be there. I'm also a fan of the zombie genre. I've read and reread "World War Z" and "The Zombie Survival Guide" by Max Brooks, as well as other lesser known books. "Shaun of the Dead" and "Zombieland" are two of my all time favorite movies, and I try not to miss any "Walking Dead" episodes. I went into this book assuming it would be funny, (from the title, which for me was the best part of the book). So I plodded thru half of the book before I gave up. PERHAPS it did a 180 afterwards and became Pulitzer prize worthy after that. And pigs COULD fly. I didn't read this for award winning potential, but for a few laughs and maybe some exciting zombie mayhem. I was mostly just annoyed.
I'm guessing the target audience is perhaps ages 10 to 16, and if that's the case indeed, my review wouldn't be relevant to them.

We Got Zombies On The Lawn Again Ma Ax Handel Special Zombie Notebooks Donnie Smith 9781484983867 Books Reviews

I'll read this book again and again, the book is captivating and fun to read.
An enjoyable Zombie farce! Told from the viewpoint of Axel, a kid with a tough background whose life seems to be a catalog of conflict, this read could appeal to young adults that may not be a typical reader of fiction.
Donnie Smith's "We Got Zombies on the Lawn Again, Ma," is a chuckle out loud read. Donnie's writing is very train of thought as his main character Ax Handel describes his personal tribulations dealing with crazy family members, a weird girlfriend, living in a small town... oh and zombies, there's those too.

I greatly appreciated that the character's voices remained consistent and realistic throughout the book, having spent years working with teenagers, this book often made me reminiscent of some of the things I've heard them say. This book is chock full of puns, witty one-liners and awesome dialogue snippets. One of my favorites being

"You hit like a girl."

"Well if you tried harder you could too!"

Overall this was a fun and easy read. Fans of 'The Walking Dead,' 'Trailer Park Boys' and 'Reno 911' will love this book.
this book was a waste of my time.it wasn't with it because it didn't have enough details nor did it have much action.this book was slow and not recommended to any one.
I think I laughed from the beginning to the end of this book. It is much different and a lot funnier than the typical zombie read. These aren't the same old zombies; they're still zombies--but some of them don't act like it, which makes the book compelling and full of surprises. And Ax Handel's sometimes-calm demeanor, other times explosive temper is hilarious. You just don't know what's going to happen next.
I would recommend this book to anyone, even if you are not into the whole zombie thing. The book gives a nice spin on the traditional zombie lore that many of us have grown up watching/reading. It is a refreshing new feel for a well known genre. For the price it is a phenomenal buy and well worth it. The best part is.... there are still a couple more books coming! Can't wait!
This is a great read for a laugh out loud, don't want to think about anything, just want to have fun kind of mood. I really got a kick out of this book. It's a unique take on the Zombie genre and was well worth the time spent on it. At the kindle price of less than 3 bucks, it's a bargain. Very happy I purchased and read the book!
